I tried to hit my hands every time i bite my nails last weekend....
But i still bite it no matter what...
And i am not gonna hit my own hand too hard because it is going to be hurt...
So, i just tapped my hands really gentle...
And i think, that is the reason why the operant condition did not work for me ....
AND I AM STILL BITING MY NAILS TILL NOW =( ....
You can try to use hand cream after you wash your hands. Every time you bite it, the taste will make you stop. One of my friends use this way, and it works pretty well. She told me that the taste is disgusting, so she can't bite it anymore. This way also takes care your hands. Hope it work for you. ^ ^
ReplyDeleteJust think of how you would feel after. Isn't it usually guiltiness? Maybe that should be a negative reinforcer. In order to avoid feeling guilty, you should try to not bite your nails. I have the same problem when I am nervous, but I try to relax as much as I can and really think if I need to engage in this action. I agree with Rachel and maybe the cream is a better option than hitting your own hand which you stated did not work.
ReplyDeleteHi Christine!
ReplyDeleteI bite my nails often, especially during tests. One thing that I did a long time ago to try and stop was to paint my nails. If I bit them, nail polish would get in my mouth and would taste bad. This is similar to Rachel's idea of avoiding biting through taste aversion. Hope your plan goes well!
hey Christine!
ReplyDeleteI do believe that a lot of individuals contribute to this same habit, and it isn't easily broken. Next time you catch yourself biting your nails maybe you should think about all the germs that are on your fingertips. Since your nails are already short from biting them, your prone to be more in contact with your fingers that aren't washed every second of the day. Think about all the things you have touched throughout that period of time since you last washed your hands. But i also agree with Phylicia on using nail polish and it tasting gross. I wish you the best of luck! :)
Hi Christine!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great behavior to work on. A couple of things-
First make sure you've invited people as "readers" not as "authors" so that their comments show up as comments and not as new posts.
Also, be sure to follow the weekly instructions for the blog posts. Here are the instructions for Week 2:
Week 2: Baseline behavior
1. Look back on the week when you tracked your behavior. How much did you engage in this behavior at baseline?
Provide information on the frequency and intensity of your behavior at baseline.
2. Explain how operant conditioning might actually be perpetuating your unwanted behavior. For example, what rewards
might you be getting from this behavior? Give some ideas of what you think might help you make long term changes to
this behavior
3. Comment on your classmates’ blogs.

Let me know if you have questions!
I definitely agree with the nail polish idea! It will taste nasty and bitter and eventually, you will habitually NOT bite your nails because you do not want to taste the nail polish.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that could work is having a close friend(someone you hang out with a lot and who is around you when you bite your nails) tell you to stop every time you start to nibble. I used to yawn all the time without covering my mouth, but then a friend of mine would very discreetly cover his own mouth whenever i yawned to remind me to cover my own mouth. Now I cover my mouth every time. Maybe you could have a friend do something similar?
I think the way to go on this one is the nail polish... If you were a guy it would be a little more difficult, but you have nail polish to your advantage! I recommend a bright and vibrant color so you can also be reminded why they're painted. And if you continue to bite them, you should paint them an ugly color like bright yellow or purple (no offense if you like those colors) Good luck!
