Week # 4

My plan of using nail polisher was actually a success...

i put the nail polisher every 2 days.....

everytime i was trying to bite my nails, it tastes weird, so i stopped biting it....

that nail polisher works really well and i really cut a lot of biting nails habit down a lot....

i usually bite my nails every time i have nothing to do or nervous or bored without knowing that i'm biting my nails, but this week, i have been stopped biting my nails after i tasted the nail polisher because it tasted so weird....

the reinforcement and punishment actually works okay....

I really thing that this operant conditioning works for human....

the only oncern is probably about my punishment ...

although i stopped biting my nails after trying to bite my nails, it is still considered as biting my nails....

i supposed to get the negative punishment which is can't watch TV for that day, but i still did watch TV.....

it also actually happened to my positive punishment....

either i bit my nail that day or not, i still ate a chocolate everyday....

it did not matter on either i bite my nails or not....

i think it is the reason why my postitive and negative punishment do not really work that well on me.....

it's just because i'm the "creator" and "receiver" ...

people are always nicer to them selves rather than to other people.....

so, if i wanna do something, i always do it for my own advantage or satisfaction ....

a response for people's comment, i actually agree with the idea of how my punishment is not really a punishment...

it's more like a reinforcer....

and i dont know what kind of positive and negative punishment that can help me for this operant conditioning....

  1. I totally agree with the issue of the person being the "creator" and the "receiver." For me, I am not as strict in enforcing something to myself than to others. Maybe something that will kind of embarass you can be a punishment?

  2. For the punishment, you can tell all your friends that you do not want to bit nail anymore, and you want them to help you. They can shout at you or do something when they see you bitting your nail, but it does not work when you are alone.... Hope you can think a good punishment to stop bitting your nail. =)

  3. Hi Christine,
I am glad to know the plan you designed to stop biting your nails is working. Regarding the punishment, I think that you are being punished every time you bite your nails. If you see it this way, every time you bite your nails, you taste the bad or weird flavor of the nail polish that certainly you do not enjoy, isn’t that a positive punishment?

  4. the whole "creator" and "receiver" aspect does have its downfall because you will do what you want when you want. This is a really tough one to think of punishments and reinforcements for. Lol maybe shouting out something you find yourself biting your nails would help!? I'm glad its working though; maybe after a while the bad taste will altogether keep you from putting your nails in your mouth.

  5. Your plan is definitely working from what i read in your entry. It is so simple and yet it is so effective. Also the whole thing about the punishment is also a problem and I'm confused about it as well. But I think Andrea is right in saying that biting your nails with that bad taste is like punishment. Hmm.

  6. I think that not watching TV for a WHOLE day and not trying to bite your nails at all in one day isn't very realistic. it comes so naturally, that its going to happen at least once.

Maybe if you come up with a different goal for yourself, like just trying to bite your nails less. And isn't the taste of the nail polish a punishment?
