Hi, I know rite aid carries a product that you put on kids fingers to help them stop sucking their fingers (it tastes really peppery). It worked for my friends daughter. I wonder if it would work for nail biting? Good luck, and if I think of something else that might help, I'll let you know. Lisa
ReplyDeleteHey, i'm a frequent nail biter as well. Lisa's advice sounds like it might work. Do you do it constantly or just when your nervous?
ReplyDeletei actually do it pretty frequently.....
ReplyDeletewhen i'm reading something, or watching tv, or when i'm bored in class...... XD
that is actually a good idea, lisa....
ReplyDeletethank you .... =)
Hi,
ReplyDeleteMy brother used to bite his nails all the time. However, he does not bite his nails anymore. The way my brother stopped biting his nails was by putting chili on the tip on his fingers. Of course he would forget he had put chili on his fingers and he would bite his nails again, but every time he bit his nails they would taste bad and he immediately would remove his fingers out his mouth. Eventually, he stopped biting his nails without being necessary to put chili on his fingers. Since we are going to use Operant Conditioning to attempt to change our behaviors, I was thinking that maybe you can use a technique similar to the one my brother used. That way every time you bite your nails the bad taste of whatever you decide to put on your nails would be the punishment to your behavior. On the other hand, every time you are about to bite your nails and you remember that you don’t want to do that (because they don’t taste good) and you actually don’t bite them you could give your self a little treat as a reinforcement for not biting your nails. I hope you don’t think my suggestion is too cruel. Good luck!!
I feel you when it comes to biting your nails. =/ I do it everytime I'm bored and/or nervous. Does that chili thing actually work? I feel like trying it too. Well best of luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Christine,
ReplyDeleteThe habit of biting nails seems like a tough habit to break through operant conditioning. I have also heard of a nail polish that has a bitter taste, which would create a taste aversion; however, since we are trying operant conditioning, there is a crueler, more difficult option... Have your friends and relatives yell at you every time they catch you biting them might be a somewhat effective form of positive punishment. It might also be effective to videotape yourself since nail biting seems like one of those habits that you may not even realize you are doing at the time.
